Before understanding the patterns of communication in an organisation one must have some pre-required knowledge about what is communication in an organisation or business communication, types of business communication and how they take place, etc.

Communication is a process which has no fixed boundary in a part of a function and each transaction in its term influences the future communication. The future communication is or not favorable to the organisation is based on the previous interactions.

One must know the main objectives of an organisation before studying the communication that takes place inside it. They are:

  1. to achieve the desired goal
  2. working in a team spirit
  3. provide information and feedback
  4. control staff behaviour
  5. provide motivation
  6. emotional fulfillment
  7. contact with internal and external agencies
  8. advertising, marketing and providing service

To understand the various patterns of communication in an organisation one has to know the hierarchical structure of a business organisation or in other words the flow of communication in an organisation. Communication moves in an organisation in many directions so that it facilitates the smooth functioning of the business. Conceptually it could be compared with a pyramid that has a larger number of people at its base and smaller number of people at its apex. The supervisory functions of the executives also increase as one climbs to the upper levels. It flows in multiple directions. Normally most powers and responsibilities are concentrated at the top but the organisation works smoothly as most of the business communication takes place through correspondence.
